Upgrade or wait? Do I need the latest device?

Many times I have people asking me advice about whether to upgrade to the latest device or not. There are a few questions I usually ask the person including:

  • Is your current device working fine for you?

  • are you upgrading to just have the latest device or do you really need to upgrade?

  • Do you want to be stuck for another couple years contract?

If your current device is working great for you, why upgrade, especially if it is all paid up? My opinion on this is if your current device is working fine for you, stick with it until it no longer works for you.

If you are updating just to have the latest device, you need to realize it ends up costing you more in the long run. You have to pay for and fulfill a agreement with the carrier, if you dont you could end up being charged fees for early cancelling a plan. also, you never get something for free. carriers exist to make money. also, if you break the latest, newest device, the parts for that device to get repaired are either not available for a while or they will be very expensive. if you get a device that has been out for say, six months, the parts are going to be less expensive and more available, making your repair cost less.

There are other things to consider, but asking the couple questions above can be helpful and sometimes make you realize that you don't have to have the latest and greatest device. You can make it fine and the world won't end if you don't get the newest thing.
